Personally, I go to the beach a lot of times alone and there is nothing more fun than riding on the beach. At first, I was very confused about riding on the beach and I had a lot of questions like if it were legal or if doing so could hurt my dirt bike. However, I had no one to tell me and guide me through riding on the beach, and that is why I have written this article to provide you with everything you need to know about beach riding.

Can I ride on my dirt bike on the beach? Unfortunately, there is no definite answer as the rules and laws that apply to beach riding are different from beach to beach. There are beaches where you can ride and beaches where you cannot. So, there is an unequivocal answer that there are loads of different laws on all the beaches in the world.

But it is important to me that you are not confused because you will have to go and ask your local authorities and check with them if you can ride on the beach and what the rules are.

Is riding my dirt bike on the beach legal?

Riding a dirt bike on the beach in most cases for a lot of beaches all over the world is legal. But, there are also many beaches that it is simply illegal to ride not only dirt bikes but also any other vehicles, especially because of fear of harm to plants and animals. While some beaches allow riding, there are lots of restrictions and laws that the authorities require that you comply to like times, days or areas that are restricted and allowed to you. So, you must be vigilant to all these laws because there is no beach where you can simply do what you want, and from my personal experience, each beach has its rules and requirements. But the best thing is that most beaches have the same rules and requirements and I would show you now.

Besides, if you think you can ride just like that with your dirt bike on the beach and not get a penalty, you are wrong because almost every day there are nature inspectors who are always there and can catch you. And at night, there are cameras, and you can easily get a very heavy financial fine; if you hurt animals, you can sit in jail and I’m not kidding; there are places where the rules are stringent.

What do most beaches require of you?

Now I will show you most of the laws that most beaches require from dirt bikers. Still, however, you have to go and check with your local authorities about their requirements and their rules about beach riding because I am sure they have more rules.

  • Do not ride at a fast speed – most beaches will require you to ride at a specific and limited speed and that you should not have to pass it. This is mainly because riding at a fast speed can harm animals and plants, and besides, it can be quite dangerous for you too, especially when you ride a slide mud. I do not know what the limited average speed that most beaches require, so you must go and find out what speed is allowed by your authorities.
  • Ride only in the permissible parts of the beach – any beach you wish to use would have areas where you can ride and other areas where you can’t ride. This is because there are areas where there are animals, plants, or even areas that are just dangerous. After all, the soil is unstable. So, you must check as well this with your authorities; I also recommend that you take a map with you and mark only the areas you can ride so you can remember them and not get confused.
  • Stand by the days and times when you can ride – Most beaches have specific times and days that you can ride, and you should not ride in the days or hours you are not allowed to ride because you can hurt people so you must ride at the time that the authorities require from you.
  • Do not disturb or harm animals – In my opinion, this law is more important than all the other laws, not only because of the authorities but mainly from a moral point of view because you can just crush and destroy animals. Also, you have to be careful not to hurt the birds when they eat; so, pay attention.

Tips for riding your dirt bike on the beach

  • Know your fuel range – if you want to ride the beach for a long distance, you will have to know what your fuel range is and prepare your route accordingly. You will have to know how many miles you can ride on your fuel tank because, believe me, you don’t want to stay stuck in the middle of the beach with your dirt bike as there are beaches that have no absorption and are abandoned which will prevent you from asking for help. So, you must know your fuel range.
  • Don’t use the brakes on the beach – this will surprise you but you shouldn’t use your brakes on the beach because it can sometimes do only harm than good and even get sand in your face. I recommend you just release the gas pedal, and this way, you will see that the bike stops because of the sand.
  • Take GPS or maps with you – something most people are not even aware of is that on many beaches, there is simply no Internet Absorption. And if you do not have a phone and you simply do not know your location, you must take a GPS with you or even a map.
  • Respect the environment – well, maybe that is not a definite tip, but I had to point out that it is very important that you respect the environment and animals and not harm them. Do not ride on the water and the wetlands and places that animals live in and, most importantly, ride only in the permitted areas.
  • Know how to Ride on Sand – Beach Riding may be easy, but sometimes it won’t hurt you to get some tips on how to ride on the sand. I wrote a guide with lots of short tips and riding skills that will show you how to ride on the sand better; so, I highly recommend you go and read the guide I wrote – click here to view
  • Ride in the morning – I highly recommend you ride early in the morning and not at noon or in the evening because there are loads of animals that start to wake up at the beach in the night and the worst thing is that there is complete darkness which means you have a very hard time seeing the surroundings, and you increase your chances of running over animals/ So, I recommend you ride in the morning only because there are no animals in the morning and no people; in most cases, you will find that you had more fun in the morning too.
  • Ride on a beach with low waves – if you love to ride by the sea, you should choose a sea that has no waves or low waves so that you can ride by the sea without the fear of the water damaging your dirt bike. I recommend you ask the local surfers about some good beach that has low waves

How to prepare your dirt bike for riding on the beach

It may surprise you but if you do not prepare your dirt bike adequately before riding on the beach, you might cause damage to the bike. Sometimes, it may not be mechanical but rather to the outer parts of the dirt bike. On the beach, there are loads of sand and a lot of salts that result in irreversible damage to the external appearance of the bike and can especially damage the frame and make it rust. So, do the following things that you need to change on your bike so that your dirt bike doesn’t hurt.

  • Clean your air filter – The most important thing is to ensure that you clean the air filter before and after riding. While cleaning the air filter is a must-do generally after all riding, when it comes to beach riding, you just have to clean it thoroughly. If you do not clean the air filter after riding on the beach, all the sand will get into the engine and cause damage to it. So, you have to clean and even oil the air filter thoroughly. If you want to know how to clean the air filter click here to see the guide I wrote.
  • Clean the dirt Bike – You will have to clean and rinse your bike well primarily to protect the bike from the water and especially the salt which can destroy not only the frame and overall design of the bike but also important parts. The salt contains a substance called opium, which can just destroy all the technical parts and so you have to clean up after riding the bike and you may even want to wash the bike before riding.
  • Remove some air from the tires – it is vital that you take a drop of air out of the tire so that you can ride much better, stable and light on the beach because it is very uncomfortable and not stable to ride with heavy and blown tires on the beach
  • Carry another dirt bike tire – A lot of people forget to take another tire. While there is a low chance that your tire will tear and damage while you ride on the beach, because the sand can be very coarse, and with the salt, it can damage the tire. So, do not take the risk, go along with at least one tire, because believe me, you don’t want to be stuck on the beach because of a torn tire.
  • Use a coolant in dirt bikes – using coolant in your bike is very important because, if you assemble and accelerate at high speed, you can heat the bike. With the coolant, you can prevent the engine from overheating, which can harm your engine. So, I strongly recommend that you take a bottle of coolant with you and use it as soon as you notice that the engine is overheating.

Is it difficult to ride the dirt bike on the beach?

For some reason, many people ask me if beach riding is hard. I have to tell you, the truth is, riding on the beach is one of the easiest and most fun things to do in my experience, especially when you are riding on beaches where the sand itself is not thick but thin. So, I would recommend that you ride on beaches where the sand is thin and not deep because other than that, it may not be comfortable to ride

Besides, I need to note that beach riding will be more difficult for you if you do not prepare your dirt bikes well for beach riding, especially if you do not worry about removing tire air and cleaning the air filter. By not doing this, you would feel the instability when riding; so, you must prepare all the things I told you to prepare before riding on the beach.
