What Surfaces Can You Ride a Dirt Bike on?

A lot of riders ask me, “where are the most recommended places to travel to for beginners and advanced riders?”. Lots become confused and when I first started to ride dirt bikes, I was very confused too. You need to understand that what suits beginners, may not be suitable for the most advanced riders.

Today I’m going to show you where are you supposed to ride in either mud, sand, grass, and snow. So, let’s get started.

Sand and dunes

Riding on the sand is very fun, especially on sand dunes. It is very fun and riding on a large sand dune is very safe, if you fall you won’t do serious damage to yourself. This is especially suitable for novice riders.

However, a thin layer of sand is very dangerous and you can get hurt in a terrible accident because sand is not easy to ride on, especially in thin layers. It also depends on the slope, if it is a very steep slope and very narrow then it can certainly be dangerous. In general, I recommend beginners insured and abide by the safety rules.

Brawley, California – This is my favorite place in California and it is generally a very popular riding destination, with 5 miles of sand dunes and 3 levels of medium and low height difficulty.

The best time to ride is through the fall, winter, and early spring months as this desert area reaches over 100 degrees in the summer. You can even camp there.

I do not recommend riders who have just started riding to go there, only those who have already learned the basics of riding a dirt bike should try to ride there. In total, it’s an amazing place for those who like to ride on dunes and sand.

Grass

Riding on grass is perfect for beginners, even on thin or twisted layers. The only problem is that it is very difficult to reach areas designated for grass and I have found only two of them.

Forest

Many beginners think they are good enough and that their riding abilities are broken and so, after a few months, they think they can start riding in the forest. They’re wrong.

The forest is among the most dangerous places for beginners to ride because they have a lot of rocks and stones in the ground. There is also the risk of hitting a tree, which can lead to breaking a leg or hand, or in the worst case a loss of consciousness and a trip to the hospital.

Riding in the woods is only for advanced riders who have been practicing for several years, however, there are very specific forests that novice riders can travel to with their dirt bikes.

Wayne National Forest, OH – This is one of my favorite places to have visited. There are thousands of miles of great trails and an entrance ticket costs about $20. Wayne National Forest, OH is well suited for novice riders and advanced riders and I highly recommend riding it.

Western Washington Capitol Forest – So the next place is for advanced riders who want to experience a challenge. Western Washington Capitol Forest is one of the best places for dirt bike riders, and its base is about 80 kilometers of riding terrain and tracks.

The forest is open from April 30 to December 1 each year and the place itself looks amazing. I highly recommend Western Washington Capitol Forest as it is unique for cyclists who want to challenge their riding skills.

Tracks

Dirt tracks are among the best places for beginners to ride, especially when the tracks are well maintained with supervisors. There are tracks suitable for beginners rider and there are tracks suitable for advanced riders, and even children!

Parks

Parks are undoubtedly among the most fun places to ride, especially with miles of space. And I’m not talking about public parks, I’m talking about parks that are specially designed for dirt bikes.

These are definitely among the best places for beginners. There are parks for advanced, intermediate, and beginner riders so it is very important to pay attention to this. Also, if you ride in public parks it is very important to get permission because you can get a fine if not. I recommend this place:

Moses Lake Sand Dunes/ORV Park, WA – A great place to ride is the Moses Lake Sand Dunes / ORV Park, WA. It has about 3000  miles of sand dunes (located at the southern end of Lake Moses) and about 3000 miles of trails but it is only open from 1 July to 1 October. This place is suitable for all types of riders. It also offers lakes and camping and fishing grounds. I very much recommend this place as somewhere to go for families.

Snow

There are a lot of riders who want to go out riding but it’s snowing for most of the year in their country. The belief is that snow is suitable only for intermediate riders and above and that it is not suitable for everyone.

There are many more things you need to know about snow and you can read more in this article I wrote – click here to view. Riding in the snow can be very dangerous for novice riders and I can understand the frustration for people who live in places where it snows a lot.

In such a situation, I would recommend traveling every weekend to places where there is no snowfall. If you want to know what places to visit, I wrote this article – click here to view.

Rain

A lot of riders ask me about rain, and it is harmless to a dirt bike however, if you do not do things right it can definitely be damaged. If you want to know more, I wrote you this article – click here to view. Generally, rain is only suitable for intermediate and advanced riders.

To sum up

In conclusion, we went through all the areas and weather that I recommend riding on dirt bikes.

Thanks for your riding. Until next time.
