How to change the oil in an ATV in 6 steps

Step 1 – Turn on the engine

The first thing you want to do before you start replacing the oil in your ATV is to start the engine to let the oil get hot.

This is important because it helps the oil to drain.

I recommend that you turn the engine on for between 5 and 10 minutes to let the oil get hot properly.

Step 2 – Remove the seat from the ATV

To access the oil filter, you need to remove the seat of the ATV.

To remove the seat, you must pull the lock of the seat up and then pull the seat back.

It is very important to do this gently so as not to damage the seat. If you get tangled up in removing the seat, I recommend you go to an expert or friend who can help you remove it.

Step 3 – Remove the cover and the side panel

After you’ve finished removing the seat you have only a few more parts you need to remove to get full access to the oil filter.

These are the sideboard and the cover.

To remove the side panel is very simple. It is located on the right side of the ATV and does not require any special tools.

To remove the cover is a bit more complex and you’ll need a screwdriver to remove the screws.

You’ll find the cover under the side panel and there are about 7 screws that you need to remove.

After you’ve done that you have access to the oil filter and you’re ready to get the dirty oil out of the engine.

Step 4 – Remove the dipstick

After you remove all the pieces and have access to the oil filter you will see the dipstick.

It is very important to remove the dipstick in order to allow the oil to drain more quickly.

Step 5 – Remove the dirty oil from the engine

After you have removed the parts and you have access to the oil filter it is time to remove all the dirty oil from the ATV.

Removing the dirty oil from the engine involves 4 simple steps:

Locate the drain plug – the first thing you need to do to get the oil out of your engine is to locate the drain plug. Take out the oil after you find it. Clean it from dirt and debris so as not to cause problems.

Place the drain pan – Once you have found the drainage hole, place the drain pan underneath it so that the oil falls in the pan and will not dirty your environment.

Open the drain plug – To remove the oil you must open the drain plug using a socket until all the oil is out. To open the drain plug you have to open the plug upwards and after that you will see that the oil is starting to drain.

Remove the filter- After removing the oil you must remove the filter and to do this you will need a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold it.

Step 6 – Add new oil to the engine

After you have removed the dirty oil from the engine, it is time to add the new oil into the engine.

Add the oil – The first thing is to put the funnel in the engine and pour the new oil through the funnel. You should put in about 2 liters of new oil.

After adding the oil, it is important to start the engine for between 5 and 10 minutes to move the oil into the engine.

In addition, you will need to check that the dipstick is full to the end. If it isn’t you will need to add more oil to the engine until the dipstick is full.

How many times should I change my ATV oil?

Generally, you need to replace the oil after every 50 hours of use.

But that does not mean you have to wait up to 50 hours to replace the oil because the more you change your oil, the better your ATV’s performance will be. But if you do not have the money to spend on oil I recommend waiting for up to 50 hours and only then replace the oil in your engine.

Things you should avoid when replacing the oil in your ATV

You should be very careful when you change the oil in your ATV because the simplest things you do when changing the oil can be very hazardous.

There are actually a lot of small things and mistakes that you can make when replacing the oil in your ATV that can cause damage to your ATV.

Because of this, it is very important to avoid the following when replacing oil in your engine:

  • Haven’t cleaned the ATV– If you do not clean your ATV when you change the oil you can cause considerable damage to your ATV. It is essential to clean the parts before every step you make when changing your engine oil.
  • Using an unsuitable oil – Another thing that can be very destructive to your ATV is to use the wrong type of oil that is not suitable for your ATV. If you use the wrong type of oil, such as oil for dirt bikes, you can destroy and spoil your engine. Therefore, I recommend only using the oils I showed you.
  • Not re-filling the engine with enough oil – A mistake that is very easy to make is to not put enough oil back into the engine. This can cause some parts to dry and prevent you from activating your engine. If the engine is making strange noises it is a sign that you need to add more oil.

What oil should I use?

There are 2 types of oils you need to take into account:

1 Conventional oil – this oil is natural oil and it provides viscosity and loads of advantages while riding your ATV. It is also very cheap.

2 Synthetic oil – the second type of oil is synthetic oil. This type of oil is created in the laboratory and are a lot better than conventional oils because they provide engine protection. They also have excellent viscosity at extreme temperatures, are more durable and much easier to clean.

However, they are more expensive than conventional oils and I recommend synthetic oil only to people who can invest the amount of money it costs.

Summary

In conclusion, today I showed you all the important things you need to do before you change the oil in your ATV and all the steps to replace it too.
