How to Sell a Dirt Bike in 10 Simple Steps

Lots of riders who want to sell their dirt bikes don’t sell them because they think it’s too complicated. Selling your dirt bikes requires a few simple and easy steps, and it would be all worth it because you can make some money.

In this tutorial, I will show you 10 easy and simple steps to selling your dirt bike

Step 1. Clean the dirt bike in the cleanest way

The first thing you have to do before anything else is to shine and clean the dirt bike. Many people don’t worry about cleaning their bikes, and then they are surprised when nobody buys them. Understand that the first impression people have is from pictures or when people come to your house and they see the bike, this accounts for a very large percentage of its chances of buying or not buying from you.

In general, cleaning your dirt bike is important, and it is quite simple and can only last for an hour. You will have to clean all the parts of the bike and not skip any, such as cleaning the chain wheel motor and especially removing all the mud and dirt marks. If you want people to be a lot more impressed, I recommend you shine the frame to increase the chance of more people wanting to buy your dirt bike.

These are the basic steps you will need to take to clean the dirt bike

  • Prepare all cleaning materials
  • Remove the sensitive parts of the dirt bike
  • Stand your dirt bike up
  • Wash the dirt bike with a hosepipe
  • Clean the wheels and frame
  • Scrub the dirt bike
  • Drying

That’s basically the steps you need to clean your dirt bike. While cleaning the bike, there are lots of different things you need to be careful of, as there is the chance that you can do more harm than good. I highly recommend you read the full guide that shows how to safely clean your dirt bike without hurting it (click here to view).

Step 2. Check and fix the dirt bike technical problems

If you know that you have a particular problem on the dirt bike and you have been postponing it for a while, or you are concerned that you have a malfunction on your bike, it is time to do a test and fix all the little problems that exist in your bike. It may be anything from leaky components, fractures, or cracks. Even the small ones that you see are very important. After you fix the problems with your bike, you can significantly increase the final price to sell the dirt bike.

Also, it is important to note that even when you do not think you have technical problems on the bike, you should still test that all the components work because the buyer is sure to scan and check that every detail and part of the bike is working.

Step 3. Prepare the paperwork proving the purchase process

I don’t know why, but most people sell their dirt bikes without any paperwork proving the whole purchase process. I know a lot of people who sold their bikes to people who wanted a refund after a few months when they have caused a defect on the bike. Without the paperwork, you cannot go to court and justify it; so, signing paperwork gives you proof, which is a big advantage.

in general, paperwork is something that you need to prepare and while you can arrange it differently as you wish, here all the stuff that needs to be in the paperwork:

  • Dirt Bike Title – as you know, this is the most important part of the document you. Of course, how do you prove ownership of the dirt bike if you don’t know the title? I wrote a guide to show you what a title is and why it is important (Click Here To Look).
  • Refund Policy – You must have a refund policy. You can give the option not to refund at all or you can give a certain time for refunds.
  • Test Travel Agreement – if you want to grant someone a test drive, ask the buyer to sign the paper that he takes responsibility for any damage. His signature helps to protect yourself.
  • Personal information – of course, the buyer needs to indicate his personal details such as name, surname, city, address and contact information.
  • Price – It is important that the buyer also sign the price, and you must specify the final price on the paperwork.

All of this will help you protect yourself in case the buyer tries to argue with you

Plus a dirty trick that I personally recommend you use is to shoot the buyer who signs the paperwork without knowing through a hidden camera which will even give you a more solid proof. Here is the best-hidden camera I found on amazon

Step 4. Set a price for dirt bike

The more important part, in my opinion, is setting the right price for your dirt bike, although it is important to be considerate.

At first, setting a price may probably be complicated but with these steps, it becomes a really simple process. Here are some things you will need to consider:

How to set a price for your dirt bike

  • Step 1 – The first thing you need to do is to figure out the starting price of your specific model. You can find the price on your model’s company website and only after you know the price accurately can you go to the second step
  • Step 2 – Once you know the starting price of your model, it’s time to take into account all the flaws and damages that your bike has and lower the sales rate. This can confuse lots of people so I would even recommend you look at other online ads on sites like Craigslist or CycleTrader. Look at the prices people sell their models to help you understand what price to sell your bike.
  • Step 3 – And for the last step, you need to charge a few bucks more than the desired price for the bike (of course, after taking into consideration the damages that the bike has). This allows bargain with buyers; I even encourage you to raise the price by even more than a few hundred dollars. With this, you can negotiate and not drop the price that you really want.

For example, if you know that your dirt bike is priced at $ 2000, raise the price to $ 2500 so you can bargain with the buyer. If, after a few weeks, you see that no one is contacting you, you can lower the price and still can save a few hundred dollars.

Step 5. Take pictures of your dirt bike in the best possible way

In my opinion, a lot of people simply do not know the importance of taking pictures of their bikes. The number one way to increase your sales percent is through beautiful pictures as beautiful and impressive pictures of your bike can increase your sales percent by 5 to 10 more. On the other hand, if you take poor quality pictures of your dirt bike, you may do more harm than good and lower your sales percentages.

Besides, the best thing is that you can take these very impressive and beautiful photos on your phone’s camera if the camera is good; else, I recommend you ask a friend or family member. Taking good pictures can take a few minutes.

Here are some simple steps you can take to take good pictures of your dirt bikes…

  • Place your dirt bike in good lighting – First of all, it is important to find a good place. It is important that the place is well kept and clean and has enough light and no dirty space not like your warehouse. Also, it is important that your bike is placed on stand.
  • Then start taking pictures of your dirt bike Container Angles – from the front and the rear. It is important that you take at least about 10 different photos from all sides, and if you want to increase the sales even more, I recommend that you make a video when you ride in the field.
  • Leave the pictures as they are – Most people will tell you to place filters on the photos to make them more beautiful, but in my opinion, it can only hurt you because you can show beautiful pictures until the buyer comes to look at the bike and is disappointed. You want the photos to stay real and authentic and show the visibility of your bike in the most authentic way.

Step 6. Post your ad

Once you’ve finished all the basics of price-setting, photo-taking, and cleaning your dirt bike, you’re more than ready to start advertising your sales ad on some of the top sites. Lots of people are quite confused and don’t know what to do when it comes to advertising and selling their dirt bikes on the Internet.

Step 7. Know how to select the site to advertise

If you don’t know, many top websites are specifically designed for second-hand sales, and millions of people visit these sites every day and you will have to choose one of these sites. Here are 3 top sites I recommend:

Craigslist – Craigslist is, in my opinion, the best site for selling used dirt bikes. Advertising is free, and their interface is very easy to use; also, you are more likely to get inquiries from people on Craigslist than any other site in my opinion.

eBay – eBay is another great option where you will also get plenty of people who will be willing to pay. The biggest downside, in my opinion, is that it will give you offers from people from all over the world and not in your area; while on Craigslist, you are more likely to get people who live near you. If someone lives in another country, you will have to lead and take care of shipping, which can be very complicated.

CycleTrader  CycleTrader is a great site that gives free advertising, and the biggest advantage is that it is rare to receive fraudulent messages. The big downside, however, is that in recent years, it has gotten fewer views and it is not so popular; so don’t expect to get lots of interested buyers. Mos buyers on CycleTrader are very experienced and buy some used things and know how to argue about the price, so if you want to sell on CycleTrader, you must be a skilled seller who knows how to deal with experienced buyers.

Step 8. Know how to post your ad

When I talk about the conscious post, I am mainly talking about the wording of the ad. If you do not display and draft the ad well and provide all the needed details about your dirt bike, you would have fewer sales percentages. So, it is very important to know every detail about your bike and include that in the ads.

Here all the things that must be on your dirt bike sals ads

  • Year of production of the dirt bike
  • Usage time
  • Model
  • Price
  • Methods of Payment
  • Contact info

In addition, it is very important that you design and write your ad in the best way without spelling mistakes and try to formulate the ad in the most authentic way you can. If you do not know where to start, I highly recommend you look at other people’s ads and get inspired.

In addition to the contact information, I do not recommend registering your personal phone so as not to get annoying spam messages. The best solution is to use Google Voice to get another free phone provider that you can place in your ad.

Step 9. Place newspaper or flyer ads in your city

A short but very important and effective tip to help you significantly increase your sales percentages is by placing flyers or ads in the newspaper or even in your neighborhood. While this method can be quite old for loads of people, in my opinion, it is the most effective method because you will get most buyers from your city, which is very easy for you.

In addition to this, an even better method is to post your dirt bikes for sale on social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, while you can even ask your friends if they want to buy dirt bikes from you.

Step 10: Know how to behave with the buyer

If you are able to get an interested buyer who is even ready to come to your home to see the dirt bike, you will need to know how to behave – what to say and what not to say and know all the details about your dirt bike. It is also very important that you are ready before you even meet the buyer.

Here are some very important tips that will show you how to deal with an interested buyer

  • Be Ready – The most important tip is to be ready and when I talk about being ready, I mean, do your homework and know everything and every detail about your dirt bike. I even recommend writing down all the details about your bike in your diary so it is easier for you
  • Know Your Place of Sale – Your place of sale can be anywhere possible. I encourage you to meet the buyer in your home, in a courtyard and even in a public car park, which is perfect because you can give the buyer a short test ride on the bike while also making sure you have a desk or simple stand so that the buyer can write on the forms.
  • Don’t give a test drive if you are not sure – most people will ask you to try a dirt bike, while it is your decision, I recommend giving the buyer a ride on the dirt bike. It may sound strange to you, but I’ve heard of a lot of people took a dirt bike for a test drive and eventually stole the dirt bike and ran away with it; so, it’s important to be very cautious.
  • Don’t settle for the price – lots of buyers want you to lower the price; it is important that you stay by your price and not lower it. I would recommend not even selling it and waiting for another buyer.

Well done, you were able to sell your dirt bike successfully
