How to make your dirt bike legal on the road

Most countries require special approval, but not all. It is very important to go and do your homework and check if you need special permission however, there is one thing in common for all countries and that is the requirement to install certain parts on your dirt bike such as, headlights, brake lights, a horn, mirrors, etc.

Now I am going to talk you through all the parts you must to install on the dirt bike so that it is legal on the road.

1. Mirrors

Some countries require at least two mirrors for dirt bikes, but all countries require at least one. In my opinion, you need to install two mirrors because they show you the riders behind you, which is very important for your safety.

Mirrors are one of the most important things not only for your dirt bike to be legal, but also for your safety.

It is very important to buy a quality mirror and stand that will last for a long time. It is important to choose mirrors made from high-quality materials so that they do not become rusty in the winter.

2. Fan

Most dirt bikes do not come with a fan because they are not designed for riding on the road therefore, it is very important to install a fan inside the engine to avoid overheating. Installing a fan is very important because on very hot days your engine can get hot and even explode so I would even install two fans to provide maximum cooling and prevent damage to the engine.

It is very important to choose a fan that  is made from high quality materials so that it is not destroyed easily.

3. Battery

Most countries require installing a battery. There are a lot of small batteries available that are specifically designed for dirt bikes and there are two main styles of batteries. The first type are batteries that work with a power source, meaning that they transfer all their energy at once. The second type of battery, which I personally recommend, are rechargeable batteries.

I personally recommend disposable batteries for people who only ride their dirt bikes on the road once, and rechargeable batteries for riders who regularly ride on the road.

4. Tail light

Tail lights are very important and they show drivers behind you that you are slowing down. In my opinion, tail lights are very important for your safety while you are riding on the road, or anywhere else for that matter. Without them, drivers do not know when you are slowing down and they can crash into your bike from behind. In addition, you must have backlights connected to your battery and it has to be lit for at least 20 minutes.

It is very important to buy a high-quality tail light that can last for a long time.

5. Headlight

The headlight is an essential part to put on your dirt bike. Its job is to illuminate your path and make you more visible to other drivers. Plus, the headlight shows you your way at night and riding without one can be very dangerous.

It is important to buy a high quality flashlight that has a large enough light beam to illuminate your way and there are some countries that require a certain size of a headlight.

I personally recommend buying two headlights so that if the first headlight gets damaged, you will have another headlight for an emergency.

6. Turn Signals

The truth is that most countries do not require turn signals and are happy for you to use hand signals however, turn signals are very important to your safety. They allow drivers to see you better while riding at night. It is important not to cut corners and costs therefore, I strongly recommend that you install turn signals.

In addition, it is very important to buy quality signals that can be maintained over a long period of time.

7. Tires

Tires are a very important part of riding your dirt bike on the road and most countries require the installation of certain tires. The role of the tires is to keep you connected to the road but the usual dirt bike tires are not meant for the road because their rubber is not strong enough to handle road speeds. Due to this, it is very important to buy quality tires that are specifically designed for riding on the road.

8. Horn

Most countries require that you install a horn on dirt bikes. The horn can help keep you safe by allowing you to communicate to people while riding on the road. In addition, the horn is among the cheapest things you need to install to make your dirt bike road legal.

9. The license plate

Most countries require you to install license plates on your dirt bike. If the police catch you without a license plate you can face very large fines. In addition, there are countries that require a certain frame shape.

It is very important to make sure that the license plate is securely installed so that it does not fall during riding. It is also important to buy and install an LED strip or any kind of light that will illuminate the license plate while riding at night.

10. Odometer

The odometer is among the most important things that countries require you to install. The function of an odometer is to show you your speed, the fuel level, and the engine temperature.

I personally did not use an odometer and had no indication of how much fuel I had left and found myself stuck in the middle of the road without fuel.

11.Upgrading the electrical system

Upgrading the electrical system is not something that most countries require you to do but it is definitely a very important thing. It will prevent malfunctions and make your life much easier. You can watch a lot of guides on the Internet and YouTube that show you step by step how to improve and upgrade your electrical system on your dirt bike.

12. Check the exhaust

Exhausts are a very common problem in dirt bikes and a lot of counties require testing of the exhaust, especially in California. There are 3 main ways to check the exhaust:

  • form of it
  • gas emissions
  • sound levels

If you have trouble finding out if there is a problem with your exhaust, I highly recommend you watch videos on YouTube or go to someone professional to help you.

In addition, if the police see that you don’t have an exhaust on your dirt bike, you can get a very large penalty especially in countries like the United States. Because of this it is important to check if there is an exhaust on your dirt bike.

13. Side Stand

Another very important thing is that most countries require you to install a side stand. Most dirt bikes do not come with a side stand so you will have to buy one and install it yourself. If you are having trouble installing the side stand, there are lots of tutorials that explain the installation of a side stand you can watch on YouTube. If you still have trouble installing it, I suggest you go to a professional to help you.

A versatile stand is a very cheap thing to buy and it is very important for you to be able to park your dirt bike.

How to get permission to ride a dirt bike on the road

You need to assemble all the parts that I showed you on your dirt bike. You also need to get permission. Most countries require special permission to ride on the road but there are some that don’t, so you have to do your homework and check what your country requires.

The only thing you need to do to get approval is simply contact one of the dirt bike companies that support getting the road bike certification and they will do everything for you. I know that this all sounds very complicated but in reality, it is very easy to do and you will need to be very patient because this procedure takes between a week and a month to complete.

In conclusion

In conclusion, today I went through with you all the steps you need to do to make your dirt bike legal for riding on the road. Remember that you have to go and do your homework before you start to modify your bike and that this process varies from state to state.
