Is it safe to store my dirt bikes at home & should I do it? (Pros & Cons)

In my opinion, the best and most reliable place to store your dirt bikes is home while there are many benefits of storing dirt bikes at home, such as preventing theft and avoid dirt bikes from weather damage.

But there is a major drawback to this that you should know. Know that if you put your dirt bike near heat sources such as stove, it can cause a fire which can endanger you and your family members. If you do not put your dirt bike near heat sources, you need not worry about this because it can only happen in rare cases. So, if you want no damage to happen, you need to make sure your dirt bike is away from any heat source in your home.

So, should I store my dirt bike at home? The truth to this question is that it depends on you. If you do not have a garage or money to pay for a storage unit, or in short, if you have no storage options, home is probably your only option, and of course, you need to make sure you keep the dirt bike away from any heat source.

If you have a garage, I would highly recommend you put your dirt bike in there.

Here are all the pros and cons to help you decide if you should store your bike at home.

Pros of storing dirt bikes at home

  • 100% secure – Storing your dirt bike indoor is really the best place to prevent your bike from being stolen by thieves, and believe me, the chances that someone will steal your dirt bike is 0 compared to storing dirt bikes in a garage or outside which is much less safe and easier for thieves to steal the dirt bikes.  In fact, about thousands of dirt bikes are stolen from these storage places.
  • Prevention from damage during winter – Leaving dirt bikes outside in winter when there are rain and cold will cause your dirt bike to be completely destroyed. It causes serious damages such as rust, entering of water into electronic parts, damage to frames, while even storing in a garage can make the dirt bike to be flooded with water. So, a big advantage of home storage is that it protects dirt bikes from weather damage.

Cons of storing dirt bikes at home

  • Chances of the dirt bike getting burned – As said earlier, that are chances that your dirt bikes will actually get burnt, but this won’t happen as long as you keep your dirt bikes from heat sources.
  • Chances that other people or kids will hurt your dirt bike – I know it will surprise you to hear that family members or animals can hurt your dirt bikes. Yes, this may likely happen, so it is important to make sure this does not happen.

How to store your dirt bike at home?

Storing your dirt bike at home requires more than just putting your bike in the living room and forgetting about it. You are required to do some proper planning before putting your dirt bike into your home.

So, here are all the things you need to do and ensure to store your dirt bike at home

  • Make a neat place for your dirt bikes – The most important thing you need to do is to prepare and have a place in your home to store your dirt bikes while keeping in mind that dirt bikes will interfere with the home’s appearance. So, I would recommend putting them in a hidden place that no one sees or in a room that no one uses and avoid putting them next to anything that produces heat such as a washer, air conditioner, oven, broiler, clothes dryer, etc.
  • Make sure there is no danger of pets or children to the dirt bikes – If you have a naughty dog or child, you need to make sure they do not hit or harm your dirt bikes by clearly telling them to stay away from it including all your family members while if you have a pet, I suggest you cover the dirt bike in close proximity or make sure it is not seen by your pet.
  • Remove the fuel and oil – To prevent a fire or explosion, make sure you remove the fuel from the tank to avoid steam and also remove the oil. I invite you to read the guide I wrote on how to change the oil of your dirt bike to understand better. Click here to view.
  • Clean the dirt bike – Before you put your dirt bike in your house, you probably want to make sure it is not dirty so that it can suit your house; therefore, make sure you clean your dirt bikes, especially the tires. For more details on how to clean your dirt bike, I would recommend you read a step by step guide I wrote on it. Click here to view.
  • Avoid the chance of steam – To prevent the chance of steam causing a fire, I strongly recommend you put a cloth in the exhaust pipes.

In general, these are all the things you need to do to store your dirt bike indoors.

If you are very scared of the idea that dirt bikes can catch and cause a fire when they are stored at home, then there are other ways through which you can store your dirt bikes, just keep in mind that they are not as effective as storing your dirt bike at home.

Here are the other ways through which you can store your dirt bike:

  • Garage – Garage is a great place to store your dirt bike because it provides relatively good protection against thieves since it is equipped with alarms, chains, and locks. The garage will also provide protection to the dirt bike during summer and winter and there is no danger of fire. But the only downside that garage has is the penetration of water into it, which can cause damage to dirt bikes. So, it is important to take this into account and ensure that the garage is in good condition and protected from water penetration during winter.
  • Storage Unit – Storage unit is just like storage in your home except that it is in a more remote location and you have to pay money on it every month. I personally would not recommend a storage unit because it is a very remote place, so storing your dirt bike here depends on you and your choice.
  • Storage in your friend’s house – If you don’t like all the options mentioned so far, then the option of storing your dirt bike in your friend’s house may probably be an excellent choice for you, especially if your friend has a garage. However, I would only recommend you store your dirt bike only with a friend you trust, that you are sure will keep your dirt bike and not ride or hurt your bike.
  • Agency – You can consult the Agency that you have bought your dirt bike because they may have already arranged a place for you to store your dirt bike. For this reason, you should consider this option too.

These are the best storage options I have found so far, but if you have more ideas for dirt bike storage options, I will be happy if you can write them in the comments and I will add it to this guide.
