A lot of people don’t know whether they should buy dirt bikes or an ATV. Even I was very confused at first, but the truth is that there is no better vehicle, for both of them, have pros and cons and, as you already know, I personally love dirt bikes more than ATVs.

In general, I highly recommend dirt bikes for those who want to experience excitement and adrenaline. However, I would recommend ATVs to those who like riding with the family or in fields and forests.

Today I will show you the great differences between dirt bikes and ATVs so you can choose the most suitable vehicle for you.

1. Dirt bikes cost less than ATVs

Many people think that dirt bikes cost more money than ATVs, but the truth is that they can cost a lot less, which gives them a huge advantage over ATVs. Usually, dirt bikes are around $200-$1,000 cheaper than ATVs, sometimes even more.

And the most amazing thing is that every year the difference in price between the vehicles goes up, which means that each year dirt bikes become cheaper over ATVs.

2. Dirt bikes are much safer than ATVs

A lot of people think that dirt bikes are more dangerous than ATVs, but the truth is that they are safer, which is surprising to many people.

In fact, ATVs give the rider a false sense of confidence because they are very stable and very easy to drive, but after a while drivers want to increase their speed and it becomes very dangerous because it is quite difficult to control the ATV when traveling at high speed.

In addition, accidents on dirt bikes, in general, do not compare to accidents on an ATV because when you ride on dirt bikes you are protected by protective equipment. You can still break a leg or hand but in comparison, an ATV weighs 1000 pounds and can fall on the back of the rider which can cause death.

Actually, dirt bike accidents Occur more often than ATV accidents, but ATV accidents can be much more deadly than dirt bike accidents, so dirt bikes are considered safer.

3. Dirt bikes can run on a single track

A very big advantage of dirt bikes over an ATV is that they have a lot more room for riding on tracks and there is also a lot more terrain for riding dirt bikes than ATVs.

In addition, you can reach crazy speeds riding dirt bikes as opposed to ATVs, which are very dangerous to ride at high speed.

Also, I personally think that dirt bikes are a much more fun sport than ATVs.

4. ATVs are easier to learn

One of the disadvantages of dirt bikes is that it takes a lot of time to learn how to ride them.

In comparison, anyone can start riding an ATV in about 10 minutes, compared to dirt bikes that can take a few months to learn how to ride.

But it is also quite dependent on the type of rider. There are riders who can learn to ride dirt bikes in less than a few weeks and there are those who can take a few months to learn.

In addition, the chance of crashing on dirt bikes is much higher when you learn how to ride them compared to an ATV. The chance of an accident while trying to learn how to ride an ATV is zero.

If you have children and you want to know how to teach them to ride, I wrote an article that will give you 17 tips on how to do this and you will find it here.

5. ATVs have a longer season

This can surprise many people but the truth is the ATVs have a much longer season than the dirt bike. You can go ride on ATVs most months of the year.

In addition, ATVs have larger wheels that can easily pass through snow and rain and even ice, or any other surface. In comparison, dirt bikes are very difficult to ride in these conditions.

I’m not saying you can’t ride a dirt bike in the winter, it’s just that in ice, rain or even snow, you must to be a very good rider at a high level.

Also, the risk of accidents in the winter while riding dirt bikes is very high.

6. ATVs crash less than dirt bikes

Although an accident while riding an ATV can be much more deadly and serious than an accident while riding a dirt bike, the chances of falling while riding a dirt bike is 100 times higher than riding an ATV because dirt bikes are less stable and durable than ATVs.

Dirt bikes are more of an adrenaline rush, but accidents while riding ATVs are far more severe and potentially fatal.

7. Dirt bikes are more of an adrenaline rush

The greatest advantage of having dirt bikes that makes me love so much, is that you release a lot more adrenaline than while riding an ATV, which makes the sport a lot more fun.

In addition, dirt bikes give you more of an adrenaline rush because you can ride them at much higher speeds.

I’m not saying that ATV is not a fun sport. In my opinion, riding an ATV can be very fun but only when riding at high speeds and to ride one at high speed requires you to be a very good rider.

If you are looking for a fun sport that will allow you to release adrenalin, dirt bikes could be the perfect choice for you.

8. ATVs are more useful

A very big advantage of having an ATV is that they can transfer equipment from place to place, mainly for farming and camping. In comparison, dirt bikes can’t carry equipment. ATVs are more suitable for family members who like to go hiking or to camping grounds.

In my opinion, the main function of the ATV is to move equipment from place to place, and less to enjoy or race, but this is only my opinion. ATVs can be perfect for family trips.

9. Dirt bikes weigh less than ATVs

The great advantage of dirt bikes is that they weigh much less than ATVs.
The average weight of an ATV is about 1000 pounds, compared to dirt bikes weighing only 440 pounds.

Being much lighter means that dirt bikes can take very sharp turns easily and safely compared to ATVs.

10. ATVs can carry passengers

The tremendous advantage of an ATV is that it can take passengers with it, mainly for field trips and family trips, as opposed to dirt bikes that are designed for only one rider.

In addition, there are several types of ATV that can carry 4 people on them and there is even a model that can seat 6 people. It is very important to know that the more seats on the ATV, the higher the price will be.

11. ATVs are great for beginners

A great advantage of the ATV is that it is perfect for beginner riders, and children as young as 3 can start riding them.

In addition, it is possible to ride ATVs at very low speeds without getting hurt on the road, compared to dirt bikes that are very easy to fall off when you learn how to ride them.

12. ATVs are friendly to all sizes

Another advantage of having an ATV is that they are adaptable to any size, as opposed to dirt bikes where you have to choose the size according to your weight and height. This means that it is very dangerous to let other people ride it because the height of the dirt bike is adjusted only to your height and your size.

13. ATVs are more stable than dirt bikes

Another advantage of an ATV is that it is much more stable because it has four wheels that provide great stability for the rider, compared the dirt bikes that only have two wheels.

Stability is a very important factor for the safety of the rider that must be taken into account.

14. Dirt bikes are faster than ATVs

Dirt bikes are certainly much faster than ATVs, although ATVs have a bigger and stronger engine.

In fact, dirt bikes are much faster because of their light weight, which allows them to ride faster and easier.

If you want to see some speed tests between the two types of vehicle, I highly recommend you watch this video which will show you some quick speed examples.

15. Dirt bikes are better for racing than ATVs

Dirt bikes are certainly much better for racing because they can drive at higher speeds and their light weight allows them to ride in smaller spaces more efficiently.

Also, dirt bikes are much easier for difficult routes where there are hard obstacles, especially when there is a sharp incline. Dirt bikes are better designed to drive on the hard ground than ATVs. In fact, it can be very dangerous to ride ATVs on hard surfaces where there are sharp bumps.

Dirt bikes also allow you to do more stunts and tricks than ATVs. It can be very dangerous to try to do tricks and stunts with ATVs due to their heavy weight.

If you want tips for dirt bike and ATV racing, I’ve written an article that will help you get ready for racing here.

16. ATVs are more comfortable than dirt bikes

A very big advantage of the ATV is that they are much more comfortable to sit on. This is because they offer very comfortable sitting positions while riding. Also, you are sitting most of the time while riding on an ATV, compared to having to stand a lot of the time while riding on a dirt bike.

Also, the seat on ATVs is much more comfortable than the seat on dirt bikes. The quality of the seat varies from model to model so the more money you invest in your ATV, the more comfortable your seat will be.

17. Dirt bikes are more fuel efficient

Dirt bikes are certainly much more fuel efficient than ATVs and this is because their engine is relatively weak and small compared to the big ATV engines. However, riding at high speeds on a dirt bike can cause a very high fuel consumption compared to ATVs.

In general, it is important to know that fuel consumption is always affected by the environment in which you ride, and how you ride. For example, if you ride very quickly and in difficult terrain, fuel is used more quickly. However, riding at low speeds and on easy terrain can significantly save fuel consumption. Also, it is very important to make sure that the fuel volume is large enough for your needs.

It is very important to know that a 4-stroke engine is more fuel-efficient and will not require much maintenance compared to a 2-stroke engine. If you want to hear more about this subject, I highly recommend you check out my article on the subject of these two types of engines. Click here to view

18. Dirt bikes are easier to carry

A big advantage of dirt bikes over ATVs is that they are much easier to transport from one place to another, which can be very useful if you encounter a problem. You will be able to take it on your own, compared to having to wait hours for a truck to arrive if you have a problem with your ATV.

19. ATVs last longer than dirt bikes

ATVs can last for a very long time. In fact, they can last up to about 20 years, maybe more, compared to dirt bikes which only last between 7 to 15 years.

But there are a lot of things that determine how long your ATV will last, like the amount of time you drive and the quality of your ATV. In fact, the more your ATV is made of higher quality materials, the longer it will last.

20. ATVs are more suitable for children than dirt bikes

ATVs are much more suitable and safer for children than dirt bikes.

Although I said that ATVs are much more dangerous in an accident due to their weight, when it comes to children it’s different because ATVs for kids are much smaller and weigh less than regular ATVs.

In fact, dirt bikes are designed for speed riding and assertive riders compared to ATVs for children, which are designed for slower speeds. Also, ATVs for children are considered much more stable than dirt bikes which means that your children are less likely to have an accident with ATVs.

What should I buy?

The truth is that there is no definite answer to which vehicle is better, each has their advantages and disadvantages. If you want to go on camping or hiking trips in difficult areas like snow or rain, I would recommend the ATV. But if you love to feel adrenaline when you are riding and want to challenge yourself, I definitely, recommend buying dirt bikes.
