1. Let them go fast but know how to stop

It is very important that when you try to teach your child that they know when to increase speed and when to slow down. Never let your children ride too fast, especially in the first few tries.

In addition, it is very important to accompany your child during riding the first few times. I highly recommend the following exercise; what I do is let the child ride fast for 25 seconds and then slow down and then repeat this process until they get used to it.

It is very important to watch the child when they do this exercise to make sure they do not ride too fast.

2. Always watch your child

It is very important to always look at your children when they ride on dirt bikes and encourage them and correct them when they make mistakes. I see a lot of parents who do not care about their children so many children get hurt and have accidents just because their parents aren’t watching closely enough.

It is also very important to watch and encourage your children after any mistake or good action they have done because it strengthens their confidence in themselves. It’s most important not to get mad at them if they fall off their dirt bike because this way you are lowering their confidence.

3. Always help them

Always correct your child after any mistake they make while riding. It’s always important to help your child become a better dirt bike rider by helping them learn from their mistakes, otherwise they can develop bad habits that are later difficult to unlearn.

I personally recommend that parents know at least the basics of riding dirt bikes so that if your child has a specific question, you will be able to answer them. If you want to hear more about riding techniques on dirt bikes, I have a lot of articles that talk about this topic.

4. Speed

It is very important to explain to your child how fast you allow them to ride on their dirt bikes. I see too many parents who let their children ride their dirt bikes at very high speeds which is very dangerous, and the chances of falls and having an accident are much higher.

In addition, your child should not exceed 30 kph in the first few months until they know to ride their dirt bike perfectly. Any faster than this speed can be very dangerous for your child’s safety.

5. Ride in open and large areas

It is very important to travel in large and wide areas that are suitable for riding on a dirt bike so that the child has enough space to ride. I highly recommend large areas such as parks, dunes or tracks. These areas can be used while your child is learning to ride.

In my opinion, the best place for your child to ride on dirt bikes is in dunes or parks, they are a very safe place for riding and are designed for beginners.

6. Teach only one basic tip each ride

It is very important not to work on too many things and teach a lot of new techniques all at once because your child can get very confused and find it difficult to implement all the techniques.

That’s why I recommend working on one technique each time your child goes out for a ride. This will help your child to focus and learn how to ride dirt bike gradually.

Working on one technique can be like riding straight and not moving to the right or left or how to start the dirt bike in the first place. It’s very important to work gradually and keep track of your child’s progress and not overload them with information.

7. Drinking water

It is very important to drink water, especially on hot days. Many parents forget to give water to their children. The better your children get, the more they’ll want to ride their dirt bike therefore, the more water they’ll need to drink. You need to remember to bring two liters of water or maybe even 4 liters if they’re going to be riding for hours.

8. Never get frustrated, and teach them it’s okay to crash

I see a lot of parents get frustrated when their child falls and it is a terrible mistake. The last thing you want to do is to be frustrated and nervous when your child falls or crashes from their dirt bike because when you show your child that you are angry, they lose their confidence and they may not want to try again.

Because of that, you must understand that if they fall, you should encourage them to keep riding.

9. Use exercise wheels

Another thing that is very important for your child’s safety when riding a dirt bike is to use training wheels. The role of training wheels is to stabilize the bike and make it easier for your child to ride. The truth is that it is very easy to ride with training wheels.

In addition, training wheels are very helpful to your child’s safety and keeping them from having an accident. It is very important, especially in their first few rides, that your child uses training wheels.

10.Explain how dirt bikes are built

It is very important to explain to your child how dirt bikes are built and the role of each part.

For example, explain how the engine works, how to give it gas or how to stop the dirt bike. It is very important that your child knows the role of each part.

11. Look where you’re going

A lot of children begin riding and do not lift their head up and look at where they’re going.

It is very important to explain to your child to look where they’re riding and keep their eyes up. Without looking at the road they can encounter rocks and stones which can be very dangerous and cause an accident therefore, that it is very important to explain this to your child.

12. Keep your elbows up

It can feel and appear stupid to your child at first, but it is very important to keep their elbows up because when their elbows are raised they have more space to go through the body and more power in their hands.

If you do not lift your elbows up you can be thrown off the dirt bike very easily and cause an accident. This is especially important when children are riding because they weigh a lot less than adults and are therefore less stable on the bike.

13. Do fitness and exercises

Another thing that is very important is to get your child in shape and strengthen their muscles. It is very important to strengthen the muscles and fitness because riding on a dirt bike requires a lot of strength in the legs and hands and needs the help of other muscles in the body.

In addition, it is important to strengthen their muscles because it will help your child have better stability on the dirt bike, which means they will crash less and have fewer accidents.

And that does not mean you have to pay money for them to go to the gym, you can train your kids at home and do fitness exercises. There is a lot of information on the internet and tons of fitness exercises you can do.

14. Make sure their feet touch the ground

Many parents do not understand why their kid cannot stabilize themselves on their dirt bikes. The truth is that many parents do not buy their child dirt bikes that fit the size of their child, which makes it very difficult for the child to stabilize themselves while riding.

Because of this, it is very important to be sure the size of the dirt bike is perfectly suited to your child and that their feet can touch the ground.

If you want to hear more about the subject and know how to choose a dirt bike suitable for your child, I wrote this article – click here to view.

15. Patience

Another thing that is very important to teach and explain to your child is to be patient because it takes a lot of time to be a good rider. It can be very difficult to learn how to ride a dirt bike at first and if your child isn’t patient, they could choose to stop learning because they are not seeing quick results.

In addition, learning to be patient gives your child a lot of value for their life because they are more patient with the things they want to get in life.

16. Write goals

If your child competes in dirt bike races it is very important that they have specific goals they want to achieve. Even if your child only ridess dirt bikes as a hobby it can be a great thing to write down their goals.

It is important to write goals because it gives the child meaning in life and also gives them a sense of ability and develops their self-confidence after they have achieved their goal.

In addition, setting goals will also give great value to the life of the child.

17. Work hard

In my opinion, this is the most important tip. If your kid does not work hard to be a better rider, they will never succeed.

In addition, if your child gives up and will not work hard, they will carry this attitude on to anything else they try in life and it will automatically affect their studies.

18 Don’t let your child ride on dirt bikes that are too big for them

You must buy a dirt bike for your child that fits their size.

In fact, if your child does not ride on a bike that is suitable for their size, it can be very dangerous for them because it will be harder to control the dirt bike.

In general, children from age 3 to 10 will have to ride on a 50cc dirt bike and only children from age 10 will be able to ride on bikes with a larger volume engine.

However, this can differ from child to child. It all depends on your child’s abilities and riding experience.

Also, if you want to know what kind of dirt bike you need for your child, I highly recommend you read the post I wrote on this topic. Click here to view.

19. Watch over them but don’t pressure them

The worst thing you can do is stress out your child.

If you look at them too many times while riding, you have to stop doing it because it’s very stressful for them.

And I’m not telling you not to look after your child, I’m just telling you not to look at them too often because it gives your child a bad feeling and adds a lot of pressure,  especially if your kid rides in races and they know that you want them to succeed.

20. Let your child ride with a friend

The best thing I think that gives the most confidence to your child is when they ride with a friend.

When your kid rides with a friend it makes them feel more confident because they have someone to talk to and enjoy the experience with.

In addition, not only will riding with a friend give your child more confidence, it will make them enjoy riding their dirt bike more.

Summary

In conclusion, today I showed you all the tips you need to teach your child and it is very important not to try to teach your kid things you do not know yourself.

I highly recommend you read and learn about riding on dirt bikes so that you know how to teach your child how to ride properly.
